"I introduce myself as a friend of Iran. I admire Iran," he said. "I have come to Iran to pay my respects on the occasion of the martyrdom of Ayatollah Khamenei and to express my sympathy and solidarity with the people of Iran in this moment of grief."
A Rare Leader Who Fused Spirituality with Practical Politics
Describing the late leader as a rare figure, Khurshid stated that it is extremely difficult to find a leader who blended spirituality with practical politics. "He was able to elevate politics to a station far beyond what we witness in the world today," the former minister noted.
He emphasized that discovering a personality so deeply committed to his people, his nation's ideals, and even humanity at large is a formidable task. "He never retreated from his beliefs until the very last moment of his life and was prepared to sacrifice his life for his ideals. That is why finding a figure equal to him is so profoundly difficult," Khurshid remarked.
Understanding the Common Soul of All Faiths
Addressing Ayatollah Khamenei's popularity among followers of different religions, the former foreign minister pointed to the shared essence of all monotheistic faiths. "The foundation of all religions is one great goal: entrusting the soul and spirit to God Almighty. The name of God differs across religions, but the path of all faiths culminates in a single destination," he stated. Khurshid explained that Ayatollah Khamenei had managed to grasp the common soul of religions and forge a bond between them, calling this trait one of the most significant reasons for his greatness.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Indian National Congress Party insisted that the martyred leader did not belong solely to one country or one religion. "He belonged to all of humanity and dedicated his life to serving humanity," Khurshid said, highlighting the profound respect and devotion the people of India hold for Ayatollah Khamenei. "We have come to Iran with a deep sense of gratitude and respect to declare the solidarity of the Indian people and other free human beings of the world with the Iranian nation."
Indian People Hold Unconditional Admiration
Drawing a distinction between popular sentiment and official state positions, Khurshid explained, "One must differentiate between the feelings of the people and the positions of governments. Governments are compelled to consider political considerations, international relations, and their agreements with other countries, but the people do not have such constraints and express their feelings sincerely."
"As a leader of the opposition party, I represent the people and am not forced to operate under the influence of diplomatic considerations. What ultimately matters is the genuine feeling of the people, and the people of India hold unconditional respect and admiration for Ayatollah Khamenei. It is with this very spirit that I have come to Iran," he asserted.
Global Message of Unity
The former Indian official likened the late leader to an elder of a family who gathers all members to solve collective problems. "Ayatollah Khamenei invited everyone to coexistence, unity, and the joint resolution of difficulties. This is the very message that must be reiterated and promoted not only in India, but across the entire world," Khurshid stated.
In his concluding remarks, he stressed the universal nature of Ayatollah Khamenei's message. "His message was not only for Islam or Iran; his message was addressed to all of humanity. Today, the world is faced with divisions, wars, suffering, and numerous crises, and it needs, more than ever before, personalities who belong to all human beings, not just to a single nation or group."
